The Sadducees Err Concerning the Marriage in Heaven

“I am the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob”

Matthew 22

The same day the Pharisees and the Herodians failed to trap Jesus about paying tribute to the Romans, the Sadducees made their attempt.

“Master,” said the one among the group. “Moses said that if a man died without any children, his brother should marry his widow, and thus have children for his dead brother. Let us say that there are seven brothers. The first married and then died, having no children. He left his wife to his brother. This happened again and again until the seventh brother died. Finally, the woman also died. In the resurrection, whose wife will she be of the seven brothers?”

The Sadducees taught that there was no resurrection, so their hypothetical situation was designed only to trap the Lord.

“You are in error, and do not understand the scriptures or the power of God,” said Jesus. “In the resurrection, there are no weddings, but they are as angels of God in heaven. Additionally, have you not read in the scriptures given to you by God that say “I am the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob?” God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.’

When the people heard this, they were amazed at the doctrine He gave.
