What do Christians Believe?

Christianity first began with a small group of followers, but would eventually spread and become the most widely practiced religion in the world.

Here is a list of some of the foundational Christianity beliefs that are universally accepted and practiced regardless of denomination:

  • Christians believe in one God, also known as the monotheistic perspective. God created the heavens and the earth. They believe the Godhead is made up of God the father, His son Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit.
  • Christian beliefs and practices are centered upon the birth, life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ and His teachings. Christians believe that we are all children of God. To bring us salvation, God sent His son Jesus Christ as the Messiah to die for the sins of the world. He was crucified to offer forgiveness for their sins and then was resurrected three days after His death, later ascending to Heaven.
  • Christians believe that Jesus will return to the Earth again and that this return will be known as “the Second Coming”
  • Christians read and believe in the Holy Bible and its teachings, as it contains the teachings of Jesus and major prophets and disciples. These teachings give instruction and guidance on how Christians should live the Gospel.
  • Christians embrace both the Old Testament and the New Testament, unlike the Jews who only believe in the teachings of the Old Testament
  • Important holidays celebrated by Christians are Christmas, which commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ, and Easter, which celebrates His resurrection

Core doctrinal themes that Jesus taught that Christians continue to practice and accept today are:

    • Love God
    • Love you neighbor
    • Love your enemies
    • Don’t judge others
    • Don’t be hypocritical
    • Ask God for forgiveness of your sins
    • Forgive those who have wronged you
    • Repentance from your sins is essential
    • Jesus has authority and power to forgive others and we must follow His example
