What Did Jesus Teach Us About Charity?
During His earthly ministry, Jesus Christ lived a life that radiated pure love for others. He consistently acted selflessly, doing all within His power to bless, heal, and uplift those around Him. More than simply showing kindness, Jesus lived a life defined by charity.
What Is Charity According to Jesus Christ?
Charity is the highest and purest form of love. Unlike superficial or worldly love, charity is enduring and selfless. It is the very love of Jesus Christ. When we focus on developing charity in our own lives, it becomes a powerful force for good—one that changes both the giver and the receiver.
The Importance of Pure Intentions in Service
Jesus taught that charity is not only about actions but also about the intentions behind them. In Matthew 6:1, He warned against serving others for recognition or praise:
“Take heed that you do not do your charitable deeds before men, to be seen by them. Otherwise, you have no reward from your Father in heaven.” — Matthew 6:1
When charitable acts are motivated by the desire for approval or worldly reward, they lose their spiritual value. True charity requires pure intentions—serving others simply because we love God and His children. Our actions must align with the sincere desires of our hearts.
Jesus Christ: The Perfect Example of Charitable Living
Beyond His teachings, Jesus demonstrated charity through His daily interactions. He healed the sick, comforted the brokenhearted, and helped all who came to Him in faith. No one was turned away because of status, background, or weakness.
One of the most powerful examples of His charity is found in His relationship with His disciples. Though He was their Master and Lord, Jesus humbled Himself by serving them—most memorably when He washed their feet.
“If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet… For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you.” — Matthew 13:14–15
Through this act, Jesus taught that true greatness comes through humility and service.
Humility and Equality in the Eyes of God
To develop true charity, we must humble ourselves and remember that all people are equal before God. No one is greater than another. Each person is unique, valuable, and loved, with individual talents, struggles, and purposes. Charity grows when we recognize this divine equality and treat others with compassion and respect.
Living a Life of Christlike Charity
As we serve those around us with pure intentions and genuine love for God and His children, we are blessed for our efforts. More importantly, we come to know Jesus Christ more deeply. By following His example, we become better reflections of His charity—His pure, enduring love—to the world around us.
