Jesus’ invitation to “come, follow me,” applies to each of us. This invitation was first extended to the apostles Peter, Andrew, James and John. Jesus literally wanted the apostles to follow Him city to city, village to village. How can we follow Jesus today?
Love God
Jesus was asked by someone what the greatest commandment was. Jesus answered, saying “love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all they soul, and with all thy mind” (Matt 22:37). We learn in John that the best way to love God is to keep the commandments (John 14:15).
In addition to keeping the ten commandments found in the Bible, we can feel close to God as we pray and study the scriptures.
Love one another
When Christ was asked what the most important commandment was, He also made sure to mention the second greatest commandment.
“Love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments (loving God and loving your neighbor) hang all the law and the prophets” (Matt 22:39-40). That means that all of the commandments listed in the ten commandments, or any other instruction from God, are based on either loving God or loving the people around us.
While we are unable to literally follow in Jesus’ footsteps today, we can follow His example and the examples of His followers in obeying the commandments and by serving those around us. We can have peace that as we do our best each day to be kind, we are following Jesus.
