Defining Peace: The First Step Toward Action
When asked to define peace, many think it is simply the absence of war. The Oxford Dictionary defines peace as:
“A state or period in which there is no war.”
But true peace is more than silence or the absence of conflict. True peace through Jesus Christ is deeper—it touches the heart, mind, and soul.
“And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” — Philippians 4:7
Two Meanings of Peace: Silence or Tranquility
Peace has two meanings:
● Absence of war – societal or external calm
● Freedom from disturbance; tranquility – inner calm and mental stillness
The second meaning matters most. When hearts are calm and minds are settled, lasting inner peace in Christ is possible. Without it, fear and restlessness fuel conflict. True peace begins within.
“You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.” — Isaiah 26:3.
When Jesus walked the earth, He greeted people with Shalom, meaning peace be with you. But Shalom is more than the English word “peace”—it signifies wholeness and completeness, pointing to well-being in every area of life: spiritual, emotional, physical, and material, and harmony with God and others.
“The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you.” — Numbers 6:24–26.
Experiencing true peace through Jesus Christ is the foundation for bringing peace into the world.

Why Inner Conflict Blocks Outer Peace
Our world is hurting, and fear is at the root of conflict. Fear tells us we lack, that we are threatened, or that others are enemies. Fear divides us inside and around us.
“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind.” — 2 Timothy 1:7.
Until fear is healed, peace remains fragile. But when fear is confronted and healed, inner peace in Christ grows, creating the foundation for external harmony.
The Path to Becoming a Peacemaker
Scripture provides a clear path to peace:
- Recognize fear – fear is the root of conflict
- Embrace love and compassion – seeing our shared humanity diminishes the urge to fight
- Practice inner silence – prayer and meditation reconnect us with the deep peace God has placed within us
As Jesus taught in the Sermon on the Mount:
“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God.” — Matthew 5:9
Following His teachings is the path to becoming a peacemaker in today’s world.

The Mandate: Are You Peace?
Peace is not just a world without war—it is true peace through Jesus Christ, a heart without fear, and a mind without judgment.
“Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts.” — Colossians 3:15
The responsibility for peace belongs to each of us. True peace requires forgiveness, stillness, and daily compassion, just as Jesus taught.
So the deeper question is: Are you at peace?
