In her recent performance at the 2020 Grammys, pop star Demi Lovato became emotional while singing her newest song “Anyone.” Tears flowed freely as she sang the beautifully raw and vulnerable words: “I tried to talk to my piano / I tried to talk to my guitar / I tried to talk to my imagination / Confided into alcohol / I tried and tried and tried more / Told secrets ’til my voice was sore / Tired of empty conversation / ‘Cause no one hears me anymore.”
The emotional lyrics, which Lovato actually recorded just days before her near-fatal overdose in 2018, seem to be a cry for help from her past self. Now after recovering and beginning to perform again, Lovato says “I tried to seek God through other experiences, whether that’s through other relationships or substances. And it’s just like, I had to realize that the God that I’m seeking, the God that I love and the God that I want to be my God is available 24/7.”
Lovato’s words are relevant for many who struggle with feeling empty or ignored. In a world where social media can make us feel more isolated and alone than ever, it’s important to recognize that God really is always there for us. As Lovato put it, “always at an arm’s length.”
